So you are in the market for a new job, your CV is good to go and you have started thinking about who you will go to for a reference, chances are that you’ve already got a few I mind that you know you can count on to give you a glowing review when the time comes… but what if I told you that sometimes you don’t get to choose your references? And no, I’m not joking!

Starting to panic? You shouldn’t… at least not yet anyway! Let me explain…
When it comes to hiring new employees, employers make lots of checks on applicants including looking at possible social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook & LinkedIn.
This is not new news, it’s been happening for years, so the savvy ones amongst us have started to clear up their digital footprint, however, you might be surprised to learn that simply looking at your activity is only half the story. What do I mean? Well, in addition to looking at what you’re saying and who you’re saying it to on these platforms, employers are also looking at mutual connections.
Well because if you do have any mutual connections, the employer can potentially get an off the record reference. OK, now’s the time to panic!
While not every employer does this and it could be classed as a breach of confidentiality, it absolutely still goes on and depending on the relationship the employer has with that connection it may in fact carry more weight than an official reference.
So, what can you do to make sure a reference from a non-preferred contact doesn’t cost you the job?
Whatever role you work in and whoever you come across, it’s always important to be professional and polite – even if someone’s desperately trying to cram their latest product down your neck on every platform going! Even if it is of no interest to you refrain from hitting back in a less than professional manner. You never know who they know.
Think Twice Before Making A Connection:
I know there is a School of thought that says bigger is better when it comes to your network but make sure it’s a positive network. If you have had a run in with someone in your past do you want a potential employer seeing you are connected to them? Do you want them to have the opportunity to discredit you
Tighten Up Your Network:
Make sure you cleanse your network periodically. People move on and if they are no longer a true contact do they really need to be on your platform? Likewise ask why someone wants to connect with you? Networking, even social media networking, is a 2 way street, if they have connected just to sell is it worth giving them an opportunity to make an impact on your job search.
As I said, not every employer will go down the route of checking their connections against yours and asking for references – but some will – so it’s definitely important to bear this in mind when building your network and applying for jobs in the future.
